Reverse dieting is the most popular answer to that question. The idea is simple: instead of returning to normal eating overnight, you add calories back in small weekly steps until you reach maintenance. The promise attached to it is much bigger. Add the calories slowly enough, the claim goes, and you can rebuild a metabolism that dieting slowed down.
The bigger promise is not supported. The smaller one is worth your time. Reverse dieting does not repair metabolic adaptation, and the one trial that tested it directly found it did not beat simply returning to maintenance. What a slow ramp does give you is information: a reliable estimate of the maintenance number you cannot calculate accurately after months of eating in a deficit.

What reverse dieting claims to do
The standard version has two parts.
The mechanical part is uncontroversial. You finish a diet, then increase daily calories by a small amount each week, often 50 to 150 calories, until intake reaches your maintenance level. Some people spend two weeks at each step rather than one.
The second part is the selling point, and it is where the trouble starts. Advocates describe the ramp as a way to “reset,” “repair,” or “rebuild” a metabolism damaged by restriction. The reasoning is that small increases let energy expenditure climb back toward pre-diet levels without the surplus turning into fat.
The first part is a scheduling method. The second is a physiological claim. They are usually sold together, which is why the method gets judged by whether the claim holds.
Metabolic adaptation is real
Before dismissing anything, it is worth saying clearly that the underlying problem is genuine. Losing weight does reduce the energy you burn, by more than the loss of body mass alone accounts for.
The most striking documentation of this comes from following contestants of a televised weight loss competition for six years after filming.
Those were unusually severe conditions: rapid loss, extreme training, a small group of 14 people. Your ordinary diet will not produce an effect that large. But the direction is consistent across the literature. After weight loss, you burn somewhat less than a calculator predicts for someone your size, and that gap can persist.
So the problem reverse dieting says it solves does exist. The question is whether reverse dieting solves it.
The direct evidence says the ramp is not special
For a strategy this widely prescribed, remarkably little research has compared it to the alternatives. One 2025 study did exactly that, and its results do not support the marketing.

So why do people say it worked
Because something real usually did happen. It was just not metabolic repair.
Consider what a reverse diet requires. You keep tracking after the diet ends, when most people stop. You eat a deliberate amount rather than an unmeasured one. You weigh yourself regularly enough to notice a trend. You have a plan for a period that is otherwise a vacuum.
Those behaviours predict maintenance regardless of the number you land on. Attributing the outcome to the calorie increments confuses the schedule with the attention.
There is also the arithmetic of the exit. The most common way to undo a diet is not a gradual return to maintenance. It is a sharp swing well past it, sustained for weeks. Compared to that, almost any structured plan looks like a triumph, including one whose stated mechanism is wrong.
The real problem it solves
Here is the part worth keeping.
After several months of dieting, you do not know your maintenance calories. Not approximately, not from a calculator. You know your deficit intake, and you know it stopped working as well as it did at the start, which is a different thing.
You cannot simply calculate your way out. Standard equations estimate resting burn from your height, weight, age, and sex, then multiply by an activity factor. Both halves have just moved. Resting burn comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which predicts resting energy use from your current stats. Activity multipliers then scale it, from about 1.2 for a mostly sedentary week up to roughly 1.55 for a consistently active one. The product is your estimated maintenance.
Use that number as a target to approach, not a truth to trust. If your ramp stabilizes 200 calories below it, your body is right and the equation is wrong. This is the ordinary case, not a failure.

- Add it where you will notice it least. Most people do best adding to carbohydrate and fat, keeping protein roughly steady at around 1.6 to 2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight to support the muscle they kept.
- Track the trend, not the day. Weigh most mornings under the same conditions and judge the weekly average. Daily readings will swing several pounds on water alone.
- Stop when weight stabilizes. That is maintenance. The total added is commonly 200 to 500 calories a day, though yours may differ.
Expect a jump in the first week or two that has nothing to do with fat. Eating more carbohydrate restores muscle glycogen, and glycogen holds water. Two to four pounds appearing quickly and then holding steady is the expected pattern, not evidence that the ramp failed.

Reverse dieting is a reasonable exit strategy with an unreasonable story attached to it.
Skip the story. Adding calories back slowly will not restore a suppressed metabolism, and the only direct trial found no advantage over simply eating at your estimated maintenance. If you would rather return to maintenance in one step, the evidence does not say you are making a mistake.
Keep the method if the information is worth it to you.
