In plain language: Tek is built to minimize data collection. Your diary is stored on your device unless you enable account sync. Raw meal photos are used to create an estimate and then deleted from Tek's upload storage. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising.
This Privacy Policy explains how Tek, referred to as "Tek," "we," "us," or "our," handles personal information when you visit gettek.app, use the Tek mobile application, join an early-access program, contact us, or otherwise use services that link to this policy, collectively, the "Services."
1. Scope
This policy applies to information handled by Tek through the Services. It does not govern a third party's independent practices, including Apple, Google, OpenAI, Cloudflare, USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts, or websites and services linked from the Services. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to their processing.
Tek is a consumer wellness service, not a health care provider, health plan, or health care clearinghouse. Information handled by Tek generally is not protected health information under the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. Other privacy and consumer protection laws may still apply.
2. Information we handle
Information you provide
- Account and contact information: such as your name, email address, account identifier, sign-in provider, and communications with us.
- Profile and wellness information: such as age or birthday, sex selection, height, weight, activity level, goals, preferred units, calorie targets, and weight history.
- Meal and diary information: such as meal photos, written meal descriptions, barcode numbers, food items, estimated nutrition, portions, water entries, meal times, and corrections or notes you submit.
- Early-access and support information: such as your email address and the contents of messages you send us.
Information processed automatically
When you use the Services, Tek and its infrastructure providers may process limited technical information needed to deliver and protect them, such as IP address, request date and time, device and operating-system information, app version, language, crash or diagnostic details, and security events. Tek does not currently use third-party advertising trackers or analytics cookies on its marketing website. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide any notice or choice required by law.
Some website content may be hosted by third parties. For example, loading a remotely hosted image can disclose ordinary request information, such as your IP address and browser details, to the host providing that content.
Information from other sources
If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive account information that you authorize that provider to share, such as an account identifier, name, and email address. We may also receive nutrition information in response to food-name or barcode queries submitted to USDA FoodData Central or Open Food Facts. Those database queries are not intended to include your identity.
Device permissions
Tek requests access to the camera or photo library only when needed for a feature you choose to use. The camera is not accessed in the background. You can control permissions in your device settings, although disabling a permission may prevent the related feature from working. If you enable reminders, your device processes the notification schedule you select.
3. How we use information
We use personal information as reasonably necessary to:
- provide, maintain, personalize, and improve the Services;
- create nutrition estimates from photos, descriptions, and barcode data;
- save your preferences, diary, corrections, and optional cloud backup;
- authenticate accounts, sync data, and provide support;
- communicate about early access, service updates, security, and policy changes;
- monitor reliability, prevent fraud or abuse, and protect users and the Services;
- debug, test, analyze, and develop features using information reasonably limited for that purpose;
- comply with law, enforce our agreements, and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims; and
- carry out another purpose disclosed when information is collected, with consent where required.
We do not use meal photos, diary information, or wellness information to serve targeted ads. We do not permit third-party AI providers to use your submitted content to train their general models where the provider offers a no-training or no-storage control and Tek has configured that control. Tek currently sends AI requests with provider storage disabled.
4. How we disclose information
We may disclose information in the following circumstances:
- Service providers: vendors that host, secure, authenticate, support, or otherwise process data for Tek, including Cloudflare for infrastructure and OpenAI for meal analysis. They may use information only to provide services to us, subject to their agreements and applicable law.
- User-directed integrations: Apple or Google when you choose their sign-in service, and food databases when you request supported nutrition or barcode lookups.
- Legal and safety: where we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law, legal process, or a valid government request, or is necessary to protect rights, safety, security, and the integrity of the Services.
- Business transactions: in connection with an actual or proposed merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate confidentiality protections where required.
- With your direction or consent: when you ask us to share information.
We do not sell personal information for money. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising as those terms are defined by applicable law. We do not knowingly disclose personal information to data brokers.
5. Data retention
- Raw meal photos: uploaded source photos are deleted from Tek's analysis storage after an analysis succeeds or fails. Short-lived access links expire after a limited period. Copies that remain only on your device are controlled by you.
- On-device data: diary, profile, reminder, and correction data remains on your device until you delete it through the app, clear app data, or uninstall the app, subject to device backups you control.
- Account and synced data: if you sign in or enable cloud backup, account data, synced app state, generated analysis records, and submitted correction text may be retained while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward to provide the Services, resolve disputes, meet legal obligations, and maintain security.
- Communications and technical records: retained only as long as reasonably needed for support, security, recordkeeping, legal compliance, or the purpose collected.
Retention periods depend on the nature and sensitivity of the information, why it was collected, legal requirements, and operational needs. We may retain deidentified information that cannot reasonably be linked to you. Deletion from active systems may not immediately remove data from encrypted backups, where it will be isolated and removed through normal backup rotation.
6. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- request access to or a portable copy of your personal information;
- request correction or deletion;
- object to or restrict certain processing;
- withdraw consent, without affecting earlier lawful processing;
- opt out of marketing communications;
- appeal our response to a request; and
- complain to your local privacy or data protection authority.
You can export or delete on-device diary data through the app. Deleting local data does not automatically delete a separate cloud account or synced copy. To make a privacy request about data held by Tek, email hello@gettek.app. Describe the request and the account email involved. We may verify your identity, ask for information reasonably necessary to process the request, or deny a request where permitted by law. Authorized agents may submit requests where local law permits. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.
7. Regional disclosures
European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland
Where applicable, Tek is the controller of personal information described in this policy. We process information to perform our contract with you, pursue legitimate interests such as securing and improving the Services, comply with legal obligations, and, where required, with your consent. You may withdraw consent at any time. If information is transferred to a country that has not been found to provide adequate protection, we use safeguards recognized by applicable law where required, such as standard contractual clauses.
You may contact us to exercise applicable data rights and may lodge a complaint with the data protection authority where you live, work, or believe an infringement occurred.
United States state privacy laws
The categories described in Section 2 may include identifiers, customer-record information, internet or electronic activity, approximate location inferred from IP address, account credentials, health or wellness information that may be treated as sensitive, and inferences drawn to provide nutrition features. We collect, use, retain, and disclose these categories for the business purposes described in Sections 3 through 5. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information to infer characteristics for unrelated purposes. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If those practices change, we will provide legally required notice and opt-out methods before doing so.
Consumer health data
Some jurisdictions separately regulate consumer health data. To the extent such laws apply, meal, nutrition, body-measurement, activity, goal, and related profile information may be consumer health data. We collect and use it to provide the features you request, maintain and secure the Services, and for other purposes with consent or as permitted by law. We disclose it only as described in Section 4. You may request access, deletion, or withdrawal of consent by contacting us. Tek does not sell consumer health data.
8. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including access controls, encrypted transport, scoped account storage, and limited-duration links for photo analysis. No system is completely secure. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your device, sign-in provider, and account access. Please contact us promptly if you suspect unauthorized use.
9. Children
The Services are not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action. Local law may permit an older minor to use a service with valid parental or guardian consent, but Tek does not currently offer a process for obtaining that consent.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our Services or legal obligations change. We will post the updated version here and revise the date above. If a change materially affects how we use information, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent where required by law. Your continued use after the effective date is subject to the updated policy, except where consent is required.
11. Contact
